There's a movie, released in 1990, called Tremors, which is a sort of science-fiction comedy about a bunch of worm-like creatures that burrow through the ground and then suddenly jump out and eat people. It's an entertaining movie, and one of the best scenes is when two of the characters, a man and wife, are in the basement of their house, and one of these huge worms tries to get in.
It seems the couple don't stand a chance, except that they have a huge cache of weapons, which just happens to be in the basement, and when that worm comes to call they let it have everything they have, starting with handguns and ending with an elephant gun. That worm is soon no more.
In short, they didn't take any chances, and went all out to come out on top.
It's a simple lesson, and one that can be very effective when applied to the marketing of your business, especially when things are tough, as they undoubtedly are now for very many businesses. In short, it means adding as many things to your "marketing armory" as you can, and then using them as much as possible to rise above the competition and attract customers to you.
One thing that is fairly easy to add yo your marketing firepower is testimonials. many companies use them, but they often don't use them enough or don't use them in the right way. Don't just use average testimonials with people saying what a great job you did. Have lots of different testimonials that relate to different aspects of your service. Have testimonials about your guarantee, the superior quality of the product, and your great levels of service. The more aspects you cover, the more likely it will attract a customer, since different customers are looking for different things and the more you tell them the more likely you are to hit on the thing that attracts.
When it comes to your guarantee, make it as strong as possible, and tell people about it, especially by linking it in with testimonials as mentioned above. A powerful guarantee that goes well beyond what your competitors offer will make you stand out and bring more business. Of course, you have to be ready to stand by your guarantee, in the same way that in order to boast about superior levels of service you need to actually provide that great level of service. But get this right and you make your competition seem trivial.
Finally, don't be afraid to compare yourself openly to your competitors and show why you are the people to do business with. Tell your prospects in great detail about all the benefits of using the product and what it will mean for them in their daily lives. A lot of marketing doesn't use all the facts available to sell the product or service, but those companies that do use everything available to them will the ones that come out on top, just like that gun-toting couple when that monster worm came to visit.
